It’s never too late
for braces

More adults than ever are choosing orthodontic treatment - to fix a long-standing concern, to correct crowding or a bite problem, or because teeth have drifted since childhood braces. Straighter teeth are also easier to keep clean, which supports your long-term dental health.

Braces remain one of the most versatile and effective ways to do it. As a specialist-led practice we treat the full range - from simple crowding to complex bites - and offer three types of braces, matched to your teeth, your bite and how noticeable you’d like treatment to be. Where it suits you, Dental Monitoring keeps trips into the clinic to a minimum. Prefer clear aligners? Explore Invisalign® and clear aligners too.

Metal
braces

The original, and still one of the most effective. Modern metal braces use smaller, more comfortable stainless-steel brackets than you might remember. They’re strong, reliable and often the most affordable option - and they handle the full range of cases, from straightforward to complex.

If your priority is a dependable result at the best value, metal braces are hard to beat.

Ceramic
braces

For adults who’d rather braces weren’t as obvious, ceramic braces are tooth-coloured so blend in with your teeth. They work just like metal braces but are far less noticeable - a popular choice for client-facing professionals and anyone conscious about appearance during treatment.

You get the reliability of fixed braces with a much more discreet look.

Clarity™
indirect bonding

Rather than positioning each bracket individually on the teeth, we use a digital 3D model of your smile to carefully plan the ideal position of every bracket. These brackets are then transferred onto the teeth using a custom-made tray, allowing multiple brackets to be placed accurately at the same time. A much more pleasant experience!

The result is a discreet, tooth-coloured brace, placed with a highly accurate, modern technique.

Braces FAQs

Absolutely - it’s never too late. Braces work at any age, and many of our adult patients are treating teeth they were never happy with, or addressing relapse after treatment years ago. Healthy teeth and gums matter more than age.

A general dentist can offer some treatment, but a Specialist Orthodontist has completed several years of additional full-time training focused specifically on tooth movement and facial development. For braces, that depth of training helps plan and deliver a predictable result.

Metal braces are the most visible but often the most affordable and robust. Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured, so blend in and are far more discreet - a popular choice for adults who’d rather braces weren’t obvious at work.

Treatment time depends on the complexity of your case rather than your age. Many courses run somewhere between about 12 and 24 months, and your orthodontist will give you an estimate after a full assessment.

It depends on your teeth, your bite and your lifestyle. Braces handle the full range of cases, including complex ones; clear aligners are discreet and removable for suitable cases. Your orthodontist will recommend whichever will give you the best result.

Having braces fitted doesn’t hurt. You may feel some tightness for a few days after they’re placed or adjusted, which usually settles with soft foods and, if needed, ordinary pain relief.

The cost depends on the complexity and length of treatment. At Auckland City Orthodontics we offer flexible deposits and interest-free payment plans, and you’ll receive a personalised quote at your consultation. See our costs page for more.
