Braces for teens
in Auckland

The teenage years are the classic time for braces - and they’re still one of the most effective ways to straighten teeth and fix a bite. Our Specialist Orthodontists fit metal, ceramic and Clarity braces for teenagers across our four Auckland clinics, with treatment planned around school, sport and everything in between.

Why braces suit teenagers

Braces have straightened teenage smiles for decades, and modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than the ones you might remember.

Proven results

A tried-and-tested way to fix everything from mild crowding to more complex bite problems.

Nothing to remember

Braces are fixed in place, so there’s no daily wear-time to keep on top of - they work around the clock.

Make them yours

With metal braces, your teen can choose coloured bands to match a team, a mood or a season.

Built to last

Tough and low-maintenance - a good fit for busy, active teenagers.

Handles more cases

Braces can achieve some tooth and bite movements that clear aligners sometimes can’t.

Affordable

Flexible deposits and interest-free payment plans keep treatment manageable.

The braces
we offer

We offer two types of braces, and your orthodontist will recommend the best fit for your teen’s teeth and how they feel about the look:

  • Metal braces - strong, reliable and often the most affordable, with coloured bands to personalise.
  • Ceramic braces - tooth-coloured brackets that blend in and are far less noticeable.

Prefer something removable? For suitable teens, clear aligners can be an alternative worth discussing.

Living with
braces as a teen

Braces fit into everyday teenage life easily once your teen gets the hang of a few simple habits:

  • Brush after meals and floss carefully around the brackets
  • Steer clear of very hard, sticky or chewy foods
  • Wear a mouthguard for contact sport
  • Keep regular adjustment appointments

Where it suits, Dental Monitoring lets our team check progress from scans taken at home - which can mean fewer trips into the practice between adjustments, and less time out of school.

Braces for teens FAQs

Yes. The teenage years are one of the most common and effective times for orthodontic treatment, and braces can correct everything from mild crowding to more complex bite problems. One of our Specialist Orthodontists will confirm whether braces or clear aligners suit your teen best.

Not for long. We recommend a mouthguard for contact sport to protect the teeth and braces. Playing a wind instrument can take a short adjustment, but most teenagers adapt within a week or two.

With metal braces, yes - your teen can pick coloured bands at each visit to match a team, a mood or a season. Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and designed to blend in instead.

Having braces fitted doesn’t hurt. Your teen may feel some tightness for a few days after they’re placed or adjusted, which usually settles with soft foods and, if needed, ordinary pain relief.

It varies with each teen’s teeth and bite. Many courses run somewhere between about 12 and 24 months, and your orthodontist will give you an estimate after assessing your teen.

Ceramic braces use tooth-coloured brackets that blend in, so they’re less noticeable than metal. Many teens are happy with metal braces and enjoy personalising them with coloured bands - it comes down to your teen’s preference and their case.

The cost depends on the complexity and length of treatment. At Auckland City Orthodontics we offer flexible deposits and interest-free payment plans, and you’ll receive a personalised quote at your consultation. See our costs page for more.
